Privacy Policy — Face Your Steps

Last updated: 7 August 2026

In short

The Face Your Steps app processes everything on your iPhone only. There is no account, no server, and no analytics or advertising services. Your health data never leaves your device — we never have access to it. This website measures traffic without cookies and without personal data.

2. What the app uses

Apple Health (steps)

Only with your explicit permission, the app reads from Apple Health:

  • your step count for the current day,
  • your daily step counts for the last 7 days, for the history screen,
  • how your steps were distributed over the last 14 days, to estimate your personal walking pace.

From this the app calculates on your device how many steps you still need today, roughly how long that takes at your pace, and by when you have to start walking. The app never writes back to Apple Health and never transmits health data.

To keep the forecast current, the app asks iOS to notify it when new step data is available. That refresh also happens entirely on your device.

Settings and daily state

Stored locally on your device: step goal, goal time, quiet hours, rest days, coach tone and the maximum number of reminders. Per day it also stores whether you paused or muted reminders, a goal adjusted for that day, how many reminders were sent and when, whether you reacted to one, when you set off, and when you reached your goal. Daily records older than 30 days are deleted automatically.

Notifications

Reminders are scheduled and delivered locally on your device. No push messages are sent through any server.

3. What the app does not do

  • no transmission of data to us or to any server
  • no account, no registration, no sign-in
  • no analytics, tracking or advertising services, no third-party SDKs
  • no sharing with third parties, no sale of data
  • no use of health data for advertising, marketing or data mining
  • no location data, no contacts, no advertising identifier

4. This website

When you visit faceyoursteps.app, our host processes the connection data without which the page cannot be served: IP address, timestamp and the page requested. The legal basis is Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR.

We measure traffic with Plausible Analytics on an instance we run ourselves. Plausible works without cookies and builds no cross-device profiles. It stores no personal data and no IP addresses. What it records is aggregated: the page visited, the referrer, an approximate region of origin, browser and device type. The legal basis is our legitimate interest in privacy-preserving traffic measurement under Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR. Since we neither store anything on your device nor read anything from it, we need no consent under § 25 TDDDG.

There are no advertising networks, social media plugins or embedded third-party content on this site.

5. Legal basis for the app

All processing happens locally on your device and under your control. Where the GDPR applies, access to your health data is based on your consent under Art. 6(1)(a) and Art. 9(2)(a) GDPR. You give that consent through the iOS Health permission prompt and can withdraw it at any time with effect for the future.

6. Retention and deletion

  • Withdraw Health access: Settings → Apps → Face Your Steps → Health, or the Health app → Profile → Apps → Face Your Steps.
  • Daily records: deleted automatically after 30 days.
  • Everything else: deleting the app removes all data it stored. Your data in Apple Health is not affected.

7. Device backups

If you use iCloud or computer backups, the settings and daily records the app stores locally may be included in those backups. Apple's privacy policy applies to backups. Apple treats Apple Health data separately.

8. Distribution via the App Store and TestFlight

The app is distributed by Apple. In doing so, Apple processes its own data — such as downloads, crash reports and, on TestFlight, your feedback — as an independent controller under Apple's own privacy policy. We have no influence over that.

9. Your rights

You have the rights set out in Art. 15 to 21 GDPR: access, rectification, erasure, restriction, data portability and objection. The app leaves us with no personal data about you at all. We cannot practically answer an access request about it — there is simply nothing for us to hand over or delete. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with a data protection supervisory authority.

10. Children

The app is not directed at children under 16.

11. Not a medical application

Face Your Steps is not a medical device and does not replace medical advice. Walking time and latest start time are estimates based on your past step data.

12. Changes to this policy

We update this policy when the app or the website changes. The current version is available in the app under "Settings → Privacy policy" and at https://faceyoursteps.app/en/privacy.
